What's Glacier National Park like ?

There are two Glacier National Parks. One is located in the Canadian province of British Columbia and is part of a system of 43 parks and reserves across Canada. The other is located in U.S. state of Montana, on the Canada–United States border with the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia and encompasses a whopping 1,000,000 acres.

Do not ask me why I have opted to write about the park in the US. I have just picked it randomly. So here we go.

The park encompasses two sub ranges of the Rocky Mountains, is home to 130 named lakes, over 1000 species of plants and hundreds of species of animals.

The park was initially inhabited by the Native Americans, including the Blackfeet to the east and the Flathead to western regions. Upon the arrival of the Europeans, the natives were driven up further north and they are today part of the Canadian First Nations.

The park was established in 1910 after the completion of the Great Northern Railway. Thereafter, it saw about 350 locations settled either as hotels or chalets. Today, the said hotels and chalets have been listed as National Historic Landmarks.

The Glaciers in the park are believed to have formed about 150 million years ago and by the time the Europeans arrived, 150 glaciers remained. By 2010, only 20 of these glaciers had been able to withstand the rapid globalization which has led to global warming. It is estimated that by 2020, there will be no glaciers left.

The park is today home to grizzly bears, moose, mountain goat, the rare and endangered species such as wolverine and Canadian lynx. Hundreds of species of birds, about a dozen fish species as well as a few reptile and amphibian species are also to be found here.

The park is also home to ecosystems that range from prairie to tundra. To the east of the park, you will find the ever graceful red cedar trees and to the west the Hemlock grows wildly and widely.

For those who want to visit the park, be advised that you need to dress warmly. It is also important that you get accompanied by a guide who knows his way around as you will easily get lost in the expanse. It is free to enter the park and illegal to hunt therein. Make sure you carry your camera and click away on all the sights that take your fancy.
