The Awe-Inspiring Contents of the Egyptian Museum

The official name of the Egyptian Museum is 'The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities'. The museum is based in Cairo and houses over 120,000 items from the Egyptian antiquity. A representative sample of the antiques is on display while the rest of the items are locked away in strong rooms.

Previously, the museum was not open to public but as of April 2015, the public is allowed in after a thorough check.

The museum is home to the world's largest Pharaonic collection. It was established in 1835 at Ezbekeyah Garden. Later, it was moved to Cairo Citadel.

Among the items on display in the museum include;

  • Two cedar-made statues of King Tutankhamen (The statues are then covered with gold such that you can’t tell whether they are made of wood).
  • A statue of King Akhenaton
  • The Nubian Kings' Ushabtis statues
  • A plychrome glass vase
  • A child mummy and many more.

Inside this museum, you embark on a journey into ancient Egypt. You get insights into how the larger-than-life pharaohs governed their territory as well as the day to day lifestyle of the ancient Egyptians. Whatever else you do during your tour of Egypt, make sure you spend some time in this museum.
