You would expect that such an important philosopher, politician and Educator from the 6th to 5th centuries BC would be given a respectable burial, and he has. His temple, cemetery and family mansion are located in the Chinese province of Shandong. The ensemble was built in 478 BC to commemorate him and his contribution to modern China way of life. The complex consists of over 100 buildings as well as the remains of more than 100,000 of his descendants.

The less popular part of the monument – the Kong Family Mansion – developed into an ensemble of 152 buildings. All this buildings are referred to in one word as the Qufu Complex. It has remained intact due to the devotion with which each successive emperor paid to the teachings of Confucius.

Many people wonder what Confucius teachings brought to the Chinese culture. For one, the feudal system, also known as the Rule of Dynasties such as the Yuan, Ming and Qing was introduced by him. The feudal system was used to unite China and rule it for more than 2,000 years.

There is probably so much to learn about Confucianism and the Qufu system that it will not fit in a simple blog. You are better of heading to the complex and explore it yourself. You may yet learn that the feudal system was invented by the Chinese several centuries before the Europeans.

A visit here will require you to carry your camera, laptop and some writing material. The best way to learn Confucianism is to have the material loaded on your laptop so that you can the theories at your own pace. However, for those of us who do not love reading, the Qufu Complex awaits. You will have fun learning something worthwhile…now how is that for a Chinese holiday?
