5 things business travellers need to know about Houston

Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States and the biggest city in Texas with a population of 2.1 million people on a land mass equal to 599.6 square miles. The city is as eccentric as the state it is situated in. Have you heard of 'Wild West'? You cannot have a better experience of the popular culture anywhere else than in Houston. Below are the top things a business traveller need to know about Houston.

1. Know how to pronounce the city

First things first...you need to know how the city is pronounced. It is "Ewe-stun", not "Huestun." Oh, and while you are at it, it is "San Phal-ee-pay," not "San Phil-eep". Being to pronounce these two names or asking to be helped to pronounce them like Texans will put you in the good books of Texans.

2. Grow some Cojones...pun intended

In the city of Houston, you need to grow some spine. The traffic rules here do not exist...you are lucky if you are a foreigner and are able to navigate through the traffic without causing accidents. If you want to make your deals without getting booked at the local police station, hire a local to drive you.

3. No Land Use Zoning Laws

If you are looking to start a restaurant next to a hospital which is next to a gun shop that is adjacent to a school, just get the permits and start your restaurant. Houston is the only city in the US without the zoning laws.

4. If in the Energy sector, you will find a home in Houston

Space exploration, energy, air conditioning and petroleum exploration are the main industries in Texas. If you are not in any one of the industries, sorry, you are way below on the pecking order. In short, learn your space...oh, and watch out for the badmouthed, twangy Texans. If you easily get offended by the 'F-word', you better get used to it.

5. Mix deal making with some pleasure

Houston is second only to New York in the concentration of theater. In tis theater district, you will find more than 12,000 seats within a 17-block radius. The country music played here is better than you have ever heard anywhere else on US soil.

Houston is a city of oil barons. The number of billionaires you will find on the Houston streets is not only dazzling but inspiring. Perhaps their business acumen will rub-off on you.
